I created visuals for the Gas Tower stage at Lost Horizon, a virtual music and arts festival developed by the team behind Glastonbury's Shangri-La. This groundbreaking event emerged as a response to Glastonbury's cancellation during the 2020 pandemic, recreating the entire Shangri-La area as an interactive 3D landscape with multiple stages accessible through virtual reality.
For the performance, I was matched with Brazilian DJ and producer ANNA. I received her pre-recorded mix, which had been filmed on a green screen and would later form her hologram within the Lost Horizon virtual environment.
Technical Approach
The workflow involved several tools and techniques:
Design & Development: Used Vuo to design and code the visuals, alongside Quartz Composer for additional effects
Live Performance: Created a 1-hour live mix using VDMX, which allowed for the integration of Vuo compositions
Control Interface: Made use of VDMX's automatic MIDI detection functionality to map sliders and buttons to a Lemur controller on iPad, enabling intuitive real-time adjustments
Capture & Rendering: Recorded the output using a Blackmagic Video Assist, with final rendering done in Premiere
Virtual Integration: Mapped the completed audiovisual mix to the Gas Tower's 360° octagonal screen using the provided pixel map
The Age of Data
The show was featured in The Age of Data, a book by Christoph Grünberger which explores the data-driven art and design projects of 40 artists, designers and studios. Read more about the feature here.
